The name Kwenda was taken from the mission station that was established by Reverend George Eva and the eight African evangelists from South Africa in 1892.
The mission station was the third after Nenguwo no ‘Waddilove’ and Epworth in the then Rhodesia. Kwenda was derived from the name of a local chief who was called “Kuenda” meaning going or not staying permanently or moving on.
The birth of Kwenda District
Kwenda district is born out of the overwhelming growth of Marondera District. This district was so vast that it ended up having sixteen (16) circuits. This meant that the management and communication of such a vast district was then a challenge. The effectiveness of God’s work was being compromised because of the long distances covered vis a vis the limited resources that the church had. Therefore in Synod 2009 a resolution was finally passed that Marondera District be divided into two, each with eight circuits. This resolution was the presented to the Annual Conference in the same year and it was accepted, hence the birth of Kwenda District.
INTRODUCTION
The Methodist Church in Zimbabwe is a fast growing church, especially in the Manicaland and Mashonaland East provinces.
In Manicaland province the work of God has expanded through intensive evangelism programmes and proper pastoral care from the Reverends, Evangelists, Preachers and the general leadership, each taking his or her responsible position in the Vineyard as “God’s Instruments” in spreading the Good news. This has seen the Methodist church in Zimbabwe emerging as one of the powerful mainline churches in places like Chipinge, which was mainly dominated by the United Church of Christ, in Chimanimani which was also dominated by the United Baptist Church, the Mutambara area and Mutare urban where the United Methodist Church dominated. We have managed to plant at least one church in every location in Mutare urban. We have also reached Nyanga, Chendambuya, Mayo, Gunde and Buhera.
The Anglican Church and the United Methodist Church in the past generally dominated Manicaland province. The coming in of the Methodist Church in Zimbabwe is not meant to compete with these other sister churches but to complement each other. This is seen in some monthly gatherings that are called “mubatanidzwa” where members from different churches gather to worship God.
In Mashonaland East province the work of the Methodist Church has been established long back in areas like Chideme, Chivu, Sadza and Kwenda. The work of God is being intensified in these areas so as to win souls for Christ.
