Gweru District came into being in 2002 after the division of the Greater Gweru District which encompassed the current Masvingo District. The first District Bishop was Rev Justin J. Masendeke and the first synod secretary was Rev C Chikwape. The District started with six circuits, namely Pakame, Shamba Silobela, Mkoba, Gweru and Holy Trinity. We started with a membership of nine thousand members. In 2004 Pakame circuit divided into two, Vungwi and Pakame. Then, in 2009 saw Holy Trinity dividing into two circuits, Holy Trinity and Shurugwi circuits. The district has also Pakame mission.
The District has put more emphasis in evangelism which has seen a remarkable growth both spiritually and numerically. We have engaged a full time worker on evangelism and training. The District have also ventured into resettlement areas and more churches have been opened. We have also produced booklets for seminars in the District. In 2007 the District held its first ever combined convention which was attended by over 6000 members at Vungwi Primary school
Since its inception the District has developed greatly. All circuits have managed to purchase vehicles and all our circuits have good manses for ministers. The District has also managed to purchase a stand to construct the bishop’s manse. The District has also started cattle project and currently we have three beasts. We are also embarking on a school uniform project for Pakame High School. The District is also involved in the construction of the Mathew Rusike Children home at Donga
The Methodist Church In Zimbabwe, Gweru District would to congratulate the Presiding Bishop and the entire Methodist community for attaining 120 years of Missionary work in Zimbabwe. We are grateful to God for having journeyed with us and we pray for our church’s continued efforts and successes in doing God's work for the many years to come.
“But even if I am being poured out like a drink offering on the sacrifice and service coming from your faith, I am glad and rejoice with all of you. So you too should be glad and rejoice with me.” (Philippians 2: 17-18)
